Have you ever used a compass and map? Why do you think these are very important tools that the kiwi workers use in the Okarito sanctuary?

In this photo Chris and Paul are holding a kiwi making a transmitter change. After we had finished we needed the compass to find our way out of the thick bush.

Kiwi workers use their compas to find their way out of the dense forest to a track or road where travell is easier. The look on their map to work out where they want to go and use their compass to travel in a straight line to the track. If they didn't have a compass they coulf go around and around in circles as the forest in Okarito is often flat and the big trees stop you from seeing any reference points, like the Southern Alps.
